In 2021, I tried my first matcha and didn’t quite understand the appeal. But in early 2024, I gave it another try – iced, with oat milk and a touch of honey and everything changed. It was calm, focused energy. No crash. No jitters. Just presence.
That moment sparked a deeper curiosity. I began trying matcha wherever I could. Some were incredible; others, not so much. I soon realized it all came down to one thing: quality.
South Africa lacked access to authentic, ceremonial-grade matcha. So I went straight to the source – Uji and Wazuka in Kyoto, Japan – the birthplace of matcha. There, I visited farms, met with generational tea farmers, and immersed myself in the craft and spirit behind each harvest.
After visiting many farms and factories, I finally found our partners, producers who have run their own respected tea brand in Japan for over 160 years.
Their deep heritage, expertise, and dedication to excellence made them the perfect fit.
What I discovered was more than just tea, it was tradition, precision, and reverence. From the purity of the leaves to the care in the grinding process, every step matters. It was humbling and transformative experience.
Mujo Matcha is the result of that journey. We work directly with farmers in Japan who share our commitment to purity, sustainability, and excellence. We choose matcha that is smooth, vibrant, and full of life and crafted for both seasoned tea drinkers and curious newcomers.
